I shouldn't do this when I'm high on painkillers....

...but I will anyways. Please excuse any spelling or grammatical errors, but codeine makes me loopy. Why am I high right now? Funny story (not really).

Let me first start by telling you that Celiac Disease weakens tooth enamel, which explains why I have always had issues with my teeth. In 7th grade I had a minor accident and lost part of one of my front teeth. So I've had a crown, secured with a long pin, on that tooth since then. Well, Friday night, about 30 minutes before I was to leave for Happy Hour, that pin finally gave out, taking half the tooth with it- in other words, both the crown and the tooth split down the middle and broke off, so I only had half a front tooth. Well, obviously, I started freaking out, crying, etc. Needless to say, I'm not good in a crisis. Luckily, Roommate is. Her mom has a crown on the same tooth that always comes off, so she called her mom to find out what she does for it. Y'all will never believe what she uses- Crazy Glue. So, being the resourceful girl she is, Roommate had some on hand. So, I Super-Glued the crown back on. And, well, since no one noticed at happy hour (or since then), it obviously worked.

I was nervous that the glue wouldn't hold out for very long, so I made an appointment with my dentist. I went in this morning and told the dentist what happened, and that I couldn't afford to get a new crown right now, but wanted a temporary fix. His response- "I can't tell you to use the Super Glue, but honestly, it works much better than dental glue, which is what I would use right now to fix it. So I would leave it alone." He checked it (pushed on both sides) and told me "wow, you did a better job than most dentists. It's really on there."

I did, however need other work, and since I was already there, and off work, I told him to break it down for me. Eek. All I can say is that I went into the wrong profession. I need about $7,000 worth of work, $2,200 after insurance. Because of the Celiac, I get cavities very easily. And this is embarrassing to say, but I need a total of 8 fillings and 3 crowns (including the Super-Glued tooth), and a root canal.

I went ahead with the root canal today, which is the second one I've had. The first one was painless and quick, so I wasn't nervous. In fact, I have always thought, "why do people always associate a lot of pain with a root canal? They aren't that bad." Well, turns out this one was a LOT more invasive than that first one. It took almost 3 hours, 4 shots of novacaine, and 6 x-rays. Towards the end, I wasn't numb anymore, and could feel everything. This was one of the most painful things I've been through. I felt the file in my sinus. The doc gave me some Tylenol 3, but my mouth is still throbbing. The codeine part has kicked in, but the Tylenol part has only dulled the pain. I'm loopy and "foggy," but still hurting.

My fear of dentists still stands.

awww, sorry you had to go through so much dental abuse today. it's time like these when you really wish there was was a tooth fairy who could come and make things better... maybe she'd just hand you a tube of Crazy Glue =;-)

take care!

Damn, $7,000. I still need more fillings, but I'm waiting until my empty socket gets better. I have had a root canal before and mine wasn't as bad as I thought, but it wasn't fun either.

I hope everything goes well.

Oh my gosh, I never knew that about being celiac - about the teeth. This past year I found out I'm gluten intolerant (I have a GF blog, cool, I know, don't be jealous) and have always had major teeth problems. I wonder if that is the cause! You might have just taught me something; I need to get that checked out.

So sorry to hear about your root canal. I had one last spring that was totally fine, but now I have to go back and get it fixed. Have some pho and some tasty baby food. Dental work is the worst. I hope you feel better soon!

Hey, had the exact same precedure last halloween this week. I have a fake front tooth. I haven't gotten the permanent crown yet, but should probably get it soon. I couldn't feel the root canal at all. I got lucky they did it in three sittings b/c I fell and broke it so they were worried I had too much trauma.

allan 10/17/2006 08:52:00 PM

Get lots of rest and enjoy the codeine :)

Melissa 10/17/2006 09:38:00 PM

Damn. Well, at least there is some difference with insurance.

I had my teeth "sealed" when I was little, and it prevented a ton of cavities. It's really weird. I don't hear about "sealing" anymore, but we should all do it. Are dentists hiding it and not offering it anymore?

Aliecat 10/17/2006 09:42:00 PM

He should have given you something stronger than Tylenol 3. Like Vicodin...or a big hammer to knock yourself over the head.

Betty 10/17/2006 09:47:00 PM

Oh yeah, for one tooth mine is costing more than 3,500 and all out of my own pocket.

KassyK 10/17/2006 10:14:00 PM

Oh no sugar...I'm so sorry!! Although you should have been giving a stronger painkiller than T3...that stuff is like candy. :-( Feel better soon sugar.

Red 10/17/2006 11:16:00 PM

Oh I know the teeth thing. My front teeth were lost when I was eight and now my front teeth are the teeth the used to be beside my front teeth. I ahve some horro stories there.

They didn't do the sealing when I was a kid but Mini Red gets sealed.

I feel your pain and hope you feel better soon.

Sucks, dude. I desperately need a root canal but I'm allergic to codeine. Hoepfully they give me something stronger...

hate dentists, but those sweet drugs ;)

btw, vicodin or hydrocodine isn't necessarily the way to go. I took em for 3 weeks before and 1 after my wisdom teeth were taken out......now I know what 'withdrawl' TRULY is

Carl Spackler 10/18/2006 09:29:00 AM

wow. not much to say after reading that. i hope your mouth is feeling better.

When I was 12 I had a tooth knocked out playing basketball. I had to have a root canal to put it back in and it was the worst thing I've ever done. Then I got braces when I was 14 and had to have that very same tooth pulled, I was pissed.

Dear Ash:

We can always count on you to post the tooth, the whole tooth, and nothing but the tooth. :)

Hoping the pain meds make the pain bearable. We're all thinking of you.

And dontcha think they gotta come up with a better name than root canal. It sounds awful. I know it is awful, but they could at least call it, I dunno, the "Happy Tooth" procedure, or "Tooth Support Correction" or something.

I echo anon on the codeine. It's great fun, but kicking it after I hadda take it for scratching my cornea was no fun at all. Bout a week of insomnia once I couldn't take the codeine at beddy bye time anymore.

Also remember that "Don't operate any heavy machinery" applies to the clothes washer and dryer and the dishwasher. At least I was able to convince my wife of that for a week or so. (She's pretty indulgent.)

Milk this for all it's worth.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Best,

David

Ouch Ash ~
Here is one for you. I went to the same doctor for 5 years and he said that there was nothing wrong with my teeth. All fine and dandy.
I have always had issues with my teeth as well and it seemed fishy to me that I wouldn't have one cavity in 5 years.
Well, my insurance dropped that dentist and I went to a different one. I get there, they do x-rays and check my teeth and I am thinking to myself. No new cavities since I had gone 5 years without one.
WRONG!!! Apparently the last doctor that I had was a quack and I needed 11 fillings AND a crown.
I did get all of the fillings done (cost me about $200) but the crown is still something I need to get done since it is $250 by itself.

I hope you feel better really, really soon!!!

Velvet ~ Most dentists don't seal teeth anymore because studies show that there were more cavities caused by improperly sealed teeth than sealing would have been prevented. They wouldn't seal D's teeth when I inquired about it.

YEEEEEOWWWWW!!!!

And I'm commenting on both the pain of the procedure and the pain of the cost. That is NO small chunk of change!

It's ironic that one of the most sensitive parts of our bodies (and I mean our gums) is probably the one area that endures the most torture on a regular basis. Feel better!

Tara 10/19/2006 03:23:00 PM

Wow, I'm so sorry you had to go through all that! If any part of my teeth fall off in the future, though, I'll know I can keep things together with super glue and that it's virtually dentist recommended. Kind of weird, but whatever works!

I hope the pain goes away soon!

Ashburnite 10/20/2006 12:45:00 PM

mjb- thanks, sweety. and yeah, I wish the tooth fairy could take care of everything.

acg- thanks. yeah, my first root canal was a breeze, but this one more than made up for that.

mappy- yeah, after I started reading more about celiac, I realized that a lot of the problems I have had can be attributed to the celiac. Sucks, doesn't it? I don't think people realize how challenging a gluten-free diet is. I'll have to check out your blog.

betty- yeah, the worst part is having to worry that your front tooth will fall off or break in front of people, isn't it? I haven't eaten anything hard in a week. ick.

allan- trust me, I'm loving the codeine, hun.

velvet- I really wish my parents had gotten that done when I was little. Although, I grew up in bum-fuck PA, so I doubt it was even available.

aliecat- trust me, I'm a light-weight with painkillers, so the T3's are doing a great job.

betty- damn! I'm certainly happy I have dental insurance (even if it only covers crowns 50%)

Ashburnite 10/20/2006 12:58:00 PM

kassy- oh, trust me, T3 is pleanty for me...I don't ever take prescription painkillers, so I'm a lightweight.

red- oh wow, I can imagine that was a nightmare. And I'm sure mini red will thank you in a few years.

gbread- yeah, they'll probably give you the "good stuff."

needtsza/anon- yeah, I tend to stay away from the "good drugs," since my dad is addicted, and I've seen what withdrawl did to him- it's scary.

spacks- thanks, sugar.

Ashburnite 10/20/2006 01:04:00 PM

eric- ouch. I'd be pissed, too.

david- hahah!!!! And yeah, I am trying not to take it too much, but you gotta love those codeine dreams when you take it before bed- some crazy dreams. And it sounds like your wife is a sweetheart for letting you use that excuse :-). thanks.

rachel- reason number 424 that I hate dentists. the one I went to all through high school messed up my teeth so badly- and he's the reason I need 2 of the 3 crowns- all because of his handy work. and $250 for crowns? I need to move to Michigan- they are $650 here- after insurance. bastard dentists.

nicole- thanks. and yeah, even a cleaning could be considered torture.

tara- thanks. and yes, SuperGlue actually really works! they should add that to the list on the tube of things you can use it on.
